A super year with a 240 million-euro icing on the cake
This is what Austrian Lotteries can look back on for the year 2023: 489 top prizes, three EuroMillions super prizes, two Joker record rounds, 43 millionaires who picked six correct numbers and the first 19-fold Toto jackpot
Austrian Lotteries’ record of winners and prizes won took on entirely new dimensions in 2023. The familiar and the new melded together to create a harmonious, colourful and tasty cocktail of good fortune.
It’s almost impossible to speak of just one event that stood head and shoulders above everything else – since there were so many of them. Of course there was the EuroMillions solo win of 240 million euros, which catapulted a win2day user to the top of the list of the highest gaming prizes in Europe on December 8, which left people amazed all across the country. But wasn’t the EuroMillions round at the beginning of August, in which 38 Austrians became millionaires in one fell swoop thanks to their lottery ticket, no less sensational? It was truly unique, not just in Austria but throughout all of Europe, in the most literal sense of the word. The prize of around 27.5 million euros won by a player from Upper Austrian in the EuroMillions in mid-September almost pales in comparison.
Likewise, the two Joker record rounds were also overshadowed a little, though they were no less remarkable. First, a player from Tyrol hit the first six-fold jackpot in Joker history in February, setting a new record win of 1,462,418.80 euros, before being overtaken by a player from Lower Austria who won almost 5,000 euros more with his solo win after the second six-fold jackpot in November and is now the new record holder with 1,467,134.10 euros.
Toto has a premiere to report: The first 19-fold jackpot in history was played out at the beginning of December, yielding a player from Vienna around 277,000 euros.
Upper Austria at the top once again
There was nothing new as far as the most successful federal state in the lottery is concerned. In the previous year, Upper Austria had already been the most successful and happiest state with 29 percent of all six correct picks, with a population share of around 17 percent. 2023 turned out to be quite similar: 13 of the 47 six correct picks in total (27.7 percent) represent the most instances of six correct picks, followed by Styria and Lower Austria with 11 instances of the top picks each.
Incidentally, the luckiest districts were the two largest in terms of population, the city of Graz and the city of Linz as well as Weiz. Four instances of six correct picks were achieved in each of them.
At least two millionaires in each Austrian state
The second gaming-related figure of note (after 240,000,000) for 2023 is 489 (which is 48 higher than the previous year’s figure). That’s how many participants won top prizes this year, each of which represents – at least – a six¬-digit amount. 92 of them – more than ever before – were even able to attain a prize worth a million euros or more. That makes for an average of 1.77 millionaires per week, or to put it another way, a new millionaire every fourth day.
The main reason for this exceptionally high number of millionaires in the previous year and thus also for the fact that there were at least two winnings of a million euros or more in each federal state was of course the EuroMillions win, in which over 72 million euros were split between 38 players.
The “6 out of 45” Lotto once again proved to be a reliable creator of millionaires: no fewer than 43 of the 47 instances of six correct picks in total yielded a million-euro prize, and thanks to several multiple jackpots, there were six wins that surpassed the 5 million-euro mark.
Broken down by game, 43 of these 92 million winnings were achieved with six correct picks in the Lotto, 40 with EuroMillions, 3 with Joker, 2 in the Class Lottery and 4 in the EuroMillions “Millions Rain” campaign.
Broken down by federal state, Upper Austria is clearly in the lead with 24 prizes of a million euros or more, ahead of Lower Austria with 16 and Styria with 14. This is followed by Vienna with 11, Tyrol with 7, Vorarlberg with 6, Carinthia with 4, Salzburg with 3, Burgenland with 2 and 5 were played via the win2day gaming site.
Single-digit numbers at the top
The most frequently drawn Lotto numbers in 2023 were 25, which were drawn 25 times over the course of 115 rounds, followed by 3 and 1, which were drawn 24 and 23 times respectively.
The single-digit numbers are also among those most often seen among the “six correct picks”: each single-digit number was drawn an average of 16.3 times. Bringing up the rear were numbers in the 40s, with an average draw frequency of a mere 13.2 times. 2023 stands in stark contrast to the preceding year, where the numbers in the thirties and forties were drawn most frequently and the single-digit numbers brought up the rear.
Incidentally, the numbers 8, 12 and 22 were drawn least frequently last year, each emerging from the hopper only ten times.
August and December were the lucky months
If we analyse the individual months with regard to luck, then August – with the big EuroMillions win – surely had to be Lady Luck’s favourite. (This is not taking into account the “Austria Super Bonus” rounds in May and July, in which 50 prizes of 100,000 euros each were drawn in a single go.) There were 67 top prizes, and 41 of these were worth a million euros or more. Second place – thanks to a rousing finale on New Year’s Eve – went to December with 37 top prizes.
